BYZANTINE. Maria Karantene. Kouropalatissa, late 11th century. PB Seal (22mm, 8.65 g, 11h). Theotokos, orans, with medallion of child Christ on breast; - above MP to left, - above ΘV to right / ΘKЄ RO/HΘ MAPIA/ KOVPOΠ/ALATICH TH / KAPAN/ΔHNI in six lines. Seibt & Tarnitz 3.1.2. VF.

The title kouropalates was originally granted only to members of the Imperial family. However, by the late 11th century it was granted to other nobles. Maria is the daughter of a member of the Karantenos family and the wife of an unnamed kouropalates. She was possibly related to Manuel Karantenos, a contemporary philosopher, rhetorician, and author.
