1873 Two Cent Piece (Open 3). OPR1-TDO, Breen-2409. Proof 66 Red-Brown (NGC). A reddish-brown, almost golden, hue accentuates this exceptional proof from the last year of issue. The nearly-flawless fields resonate against the brilliant luster of the surfaces, making this example a priority for any Two Cent or copper collector. Furthering its rarity, however, this piece features a tripled obverse die, with distorted and pivoted hub doubling within the motto, as well as a repunched date. The die scratches from the left arrow tip through the ‘IN’ in the motto are diagnostic for this scarce variety. NGC Population: 9, with none finer
