251, Lot: 41. Estimate $200.
Sold for $1000. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

ARGOLIS, Argos. Circa 90-50 BC. AR Hemidrachm (15mm, 2.38 g, 7h). Hieron, magistrate. Forepart of wolf at bay to left / Large A; I-E/P-Ω/NO-Σ in three lines across field; below, eagle standing right; all within incuse square. BCD Peloponnesos 1177-8. Good VF, toned.

Ex BCD Collection (not in previous sales); Glendining (5 March 1980), lot 182 (part of).

It is possible that the issues of this series with the standing eagle symbol, which all appear to have been struck in haste, are actually issues of Cleopatra VII from the 30s BC. Until further evidence is brought to light, though, such an attribution remains uncertain.
