Coin Weights. 4th-5th centuries AD. Æ “Eighteen nomismata” weight (29mm, 28.11 g). ΓIA MAPIA BOH•ICON, monogram above И IH / Concentric circles. Cf. Bendall 86 (for monogram and type); Musée d’art et d’histoire de Genève -. Near VF.
Bendall’s weight 86 is square, with the the corners filed down to leave the central portion, which is nearly identical to this piece, raised. The weight of the current specimen is far below the marked eighteen nomismata weight, suggesting it was placed in some kind of frame that would bring the weight into accord with the denomination while drawing attention to the central portion, as was done with the filing on Bendall 86.
