Extremely Rare Issue in the Name of Princess Orodaltis

BITHYNIA, Kios (as Prusias ad Mare). Orodaltis, daughter of King Lykomedes of Comana. Mid-late 1st century BC. Æ (19mm, 4.91 g, 12h). Diademed and draped bust right / Winged thunderbolt within wreath. RPC I 2021 (same dies); RG 8 (same dies). Near VF, dark green patina. Extremely rare - only two specimens recorded in RPC, both in museum collections (Paris and Leningrad).


Orodaltis’ father, Lykomedes, ruled Comana as a client king for the Romans. He was installed by Julius Caesar in 47 BC and sided with Mark Antony during the civil war. Her mother, Queen Orsobaris, was the youngest daughter of Mithradates VI.
