LUCANIA, Thourioi. Circa 300-280 BC. AR Nomos – Stater (19mm, 8.11 g, 12h). Helmeted head of Athena right, helmet decorated with Skylla throwing stone / Bull butting right; ΣAN above; [AMΦ and lion in exergue]. HN Italy -; SNG ANS -; SNG Ashmoleon 984 corr. (ΣAN not ΣAM; same rev. die). VF, toned, struck from worn obverse die. Extremely rare issue with ΣAN.
From the Colin E. Pitchfork Collection.
HN Italy 1873, with ΣAM, erroneously references SNG Ashmoleon 984, where only the ΣA is visible. However, the appearance of this coin, from the same reverse die, clarifies the reading, revealing the third letter to be an N, not M.
