Interesting Engraver’s Error

255, Lot: 445. Estimate $150.
Sold for $260. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

TUDOR. Philip & Mary. 1554-1558. AR Shilling (30mm, 5.23 g, 3h). Tower (London) mint. Undated issue, struck 1554. PHILIP · ET · MARIA · D · G · R · ANG · FR · NEAP · PR · HISP, busts of Philip, armored, and Mary, mantled and wearing headdress, facing one another; crown above / POSVIMVS · DEVS (sic) · ADIVTOREM · NOSTRVM, crowned and garnished coat-of-arms; X-II (denomination) across upper field. North 1967; SCBC 2498; St. James 12, 402 (same rev. die). Near Fine, toned.

From the C.W. Pearson Collection.

An interesting engraver’s error in the reverse legend, featuring the nominative of Deus rather than the accusative (Deum). This reverse is also shared by a 1554 dated issue shilling (St. James 12, lot 402), showing the use of the die across different obverse types.
