Sold for $120. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THESSALY, Peumata. 3rd century BC. Æ Chalkous (13mm, 2.00 g, 10h). Wreathed head of Achilles to right / AX monogram; Thessalian helmet to right. Heyman, Les monnaies de Peuma en Thessalie RBN 1967, 1-4; Rogers 442; BCD Thessaly 1248; Moustaka 154. Good VF, brown patina.

From the BCD sale: “Heyman has done a remarkable amount a work on the identification of the head on the obverse. It has been termed the head of a nymph, some thinking it could be Thetis, but the hairstyle seem definitely masculine. Since Achilles was venerated in the area, he is the likely candidate.”
