PHLIASIA, Phlious. Late 6th-early 5th centuries BC. AR Obol – Twelfth Stater (7mm, 1.13 g). Human leg bent to right / Quadripartite incuse square, opposite sections sunk at different depths. BCD Peloponnesos 79-80 var. (incuse type); HGC 5, 136 var. (same). VF, toned, a little porosity. Unpublished variety.

From the BCD Collection (not in previous BCD sales).

The incuse on this piece is quite different from the norm in this series, where an incuse square is divided by scattered lines into irregular compartments. While the style of the obverse is a little crude, the unusual incuse does not suggest an ancient forgery, but perhaps an innovation occurring at or near the end of this series.
