LYCIA, Tlos. Circa 450-380 BC. AR Stater (22mm, 8.51 g, 5h). Facing lion scalp / Two seated panthers confronted, heads facing, raising forepaws; TL-AWI (in Lycian) at sides, spiral symbol between. Falghera 189; SNG Copenhagen Supp. -; SNG von Aulock -; Traité II 439 (same rev. die); S. Hurter, “Der Tissaphernes-Fund,”
Essays Thompson, 36 (same dies). Good VF, toned, underlying luster, softly struck on reverse. Very rare.
Ex LHS 103 (5 May 2009), lot 142; Leu 20 (25 April 1978), lot 142.
LHS gave a further pedigree to the Tissaphernes Find, but this must be incorrect. The find had two examples from the same dies as this coin, but this is not the illustrated example, nor does this coin does match the weight and die axis of the unillustrated coin.
