PHOENICIA, Byblos (Gebal). Uncertain king. Circa 410-404 BC. AR Thirty-Second Shekel (8mm, 0.35 g, 7h). Galley with two hoplites left; below, hippocamp left / Griffin seated left, raising right forepaw. Betlyon 13 corr. (obv. type & illustration) = de Luynes 3155; Rouvier 649; HGC 10, -. VF, toned, slight roughness. Very rare.
Betlyon, although referencing the de Luynes coin, slightly errs in the description of the obverse type, but then adds to the error by illustrating a coin that is actually from the first series of Byblos (with sphinx/falcon type, see lot 498 above). The confusion is evident in HGC 10, where no. 123 references Betlyon 13, but this is only correct in regard to Betlyon’s erroneous illustration.
