CILICIA, Tarsus. Gordian III. AD 238-244. Æ (36mm, 23.09 g, 6h). Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Two Ciliarch crowns, the outer decorated with nine busts, the inner with six. SNG France 1677 (same dies); cf. SNG Levante 1135. Near EF, dark green patina, a few minor cleaning marks.

The Ciliarch or Cilicarch was the name for the High Priest of Cilicia who presided over provincial temples dedicated to certain emperors. The different busts which decorate the crown represent the various emperors who were honored at each respective temple.
