Carlo Foa, a celebrated professor of medicine in pre-World War II Italy, was exiled in 1938 following Mussolini’s promulgation of Racial Laws against Jews. During his time in exile, he taught at the University of São Paolo in Brazil. After the completion of the war, he retuned to Milan, whereupon he was reinstated to his former post. This coin, along with a small group of other Italian and world coins, was reportedly acquired from Foa’s grandson through private treaty.
