ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of All England. Edward the Confessor. 1042-1066. AR Penny (14mm, 1.03 g, 3h). Small Flan type (BMC ii, Hild. B). Cambridge mint; Wulfwine, moneyer. Struck circa 1048-1050. CDPE RD REX, diademed and draped bust left / + PVLFPI(NE) ON GRΛ, voided short cross. Freeman 104 = F. Elmore Jones Collection (Glendining, 12 May 1971), lot 143 = William Luard Raynes Collection (Glendining, 15 February 1950), lot 414 (part of) (same dies); SCBI -; BMC -; North 818; SCBC 1175. Good VF, toned, flan crack, and some roughness on the reverse. Only the fourth coin recorded of this type from this mint (see Baldwin’s 18 [Eaglen], lots 1355-6 for the second and third). Extremely rare.
