264, Lot: 633. Estimate $200.
Sold for $750. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Lot of nineteen (19) lead cross pendants. Byzantine. A variety of designs and decorations. Lot also includes an unusual pendant in the form of a bird (or fish?). Lengths: 2.5-5.0cm,. Some surface roughness, a couple with broken loops.

Most of the designs are geometric and fairly simple examples of these Byzantine era crosses. One highly interesting example, however, depicts a figure crucified upside down. This must represent St. Peter, who requested such a crucifixion as he felt unworthy to be die in the same manner as Christ, and perhaps belonged to a Catholic rather than Orthodox christian.
