SELEUKID KINGS of SYRIA. Antiochos I Soter. 281-261 BC. Stater (Gold, 8.50 g 4), Susa, c. 280s. Head of Athena to right, wearing a pendant earring, a pearl necklace, and a crested Corinthian helmet ornamented with a sphinx on the bowl. Rev. ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ Nike standing left, holding wreath in her left hand and stylis in her right; below left, monogram of ΚΡ; below right, monogram of ΦΑΝ. ESM 347. Houghton, CSE, 1041 = SC 397.2b (this coin). Very rare. A coin of excellent style struck in high relief. Minor marks and very slight abrasions, otherwise, about extremely fine.

Antiochos I ruled the Seleukid Empire for a generation: at the age of 30 he became co-regent with his father Seleukos I in 294, then sole ruler in 281-280, and, finally, senior king, first with his elder son Seleukos who revolted and was executed in 267, then with Antiochos II.
