L. Papius. 79 BC. Denarius serratis (Silver, 3.81 g 3), Rome. Head of Juno Sospita to right, wearing goat skin headdress; behind, awl.
Rev. L. PAPI Griffin leaping to right; below, animal leg with hoof. Babelon (Papia) 1. Crawford 384/1 (but this symbol pair unknown). Sydenham 773. A clear example with an interesting symbol. Nearly extremely fine.
The symbols on this denarius seem to be unknown: they are, perhaps, an awl on the obverse and a horse’s leg and hoof on the reverse.
