August of 1737 was a tumultuous month for Geneva. Frustrated by the rigid social and political structure of the tiny Republic, the bourgeoisie militia armed and took control. In response, the city called upon representatives from France, Zurich, and Berne to arbitrate the dispute. After six months of deliberation, an agreement to increase the power of the General Council was reached. This treaty would keep the city in peace until the chaos of the French revolution.
