MACEDON, Kings of. Alexander III. 336-323 BC. AV Stater (8.55 gm). Tarsos mint? Struck 327-323 BC. Helmeted head of Athena right; griffin on helmet / Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylus; monogram in left field. Price -; Hersh -; Müller -. VF. Apparently unpublished in the standard references, but see CNG 42 (29-30 May 1997), lot 235 for another example struck from the same dies. ($1500)

This Alexander stater has a most attractive representation of Athena, with short curly "permed" hair in a style that is infrequently encountered. The closest parallel is found in the obverse die of Price 3009, a stater of Tarsos. The magistrate's monogram signing the reverse is found only on tetradrachms of Kolophon, Magnesia, and Paphos (where it is also used on a single bronze issue). On the basis of style, though, it seems most likely that this stater was struck at Tarsos.
