THESSALY, Thessalian League. Circa 361-360 BC. Æ Chalkous (14mm, 2.77 g, 12h). Head of Zeus to r., wearing oak wreath / ΠΕΤ-ΘΑ-ΛΩΝ clockwise and circular from top l., forepart of prancing horse to r. emerging from a rock. Nomos 4, 1008 var. [trident below on rev.]. Good VF, nice olive patina with some earthen encrustation and corrosion pits on reverse.
The very handsome dies for this coin were engraved by the same artist who prepared the dies for the Nomos coin (see above). It is however interesting to note that on this coin no trident symbol was added which means that the artist was free to vary his subject so that it would fit the area that was available on the die surface.
