THESSALY, Phalanna. 3rd century BC. Æ Dichalkon (16mm, 4.04 g, 12h). Youthful male head l., its hair unruly but retained by a diadem / ΦAΛANA from above, r. down circular, head of nymph l., wearing small pendant earring, her hair done up and gathered in sakkos tying behind her head. This type not found in the reference literature consulted but should belong to Papaevangelou-Genakos period 2. VF, dark green patina with minor light pitting, mostly in the fields; small die flaw at the tip of the nymph’s nose; an extremely rare type, perhaps unpublished.

Youthful male head r., its hair unruly / ΦAΛ-AN-A from above l., r. and circular, head of nymph r., her hair done up and gathered in sakkos tying behind her head, pellet under her chin. Papaevangelou-Genakos period 2, plate 2, 13 (this coin); see also CNG e-sale 235 (23 June 2010) 117 (same obv. die but the rev. legend differs); Nomos 4, 1259 (same rev. die). Near VF, brown patina; on the rev. some bronze is showing at the high relief area and there is a corrosion spot at 1 o’clock.
