(872.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Late 2nd – mid 1st century BC. AR Stater (20mm, 6.16 g, 1h). Alexippos and Nikator, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing laurel wreath / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; AΛEΞ-IΠΠOΣ above spear, NI-KA/T-Ω/P across central field. McClean 4947, pl. 179, 17 var. (same obv. die; division of names, third magistrate). Near VF, from a worn obv. die; very rare.

Purchased from Credit de la Bourse, November 1995, for FF 1200.


(872.2) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Late 2nd – mid 1st century BC. AR Stater (23mm, 5.78 g, 12h). Alexippos, Hera..., and Nikator, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing laurel wreath / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; [A]ΛEΞIΠ-ΠO[Σ] above spear, H-PA and NI-KA/T-Ω/P across central field. McClean 4947, pl. 179, 17 var. (same obv. die; division of names in central field). VF, recently cleaned, obv. field a bit etched; very rare.


(872.3) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. AR Stater (22mm, 6.19 g, 12h). Ptolemaios and Aris(tokles), magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing laurel wreath; ΠTOΛEMAIO[Y] to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; to upper right, owl standing right on spear; A-PI/Σ across central field. Not found in the consulted references, but see Klose p. 344, 7th entry for these magistrates, and McClean 4864, possibly of this issue, but with obverse name missing. Near VF, toned, traces of deposit; very rare.


(872.4) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. AR Stater (20mm, 5.78 g, 12h). Ptolemaios and Aristokles, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath; ΠTOΛEMAIO[Y] to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; API-CTO/KΛ-HC above spear and across central field. McClean 4832-40 (same rev. die). VF, lightly toned.

Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath; [ΠT]OΛEMAIOY to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; A-PIΣ/TO-KΛ/HΣ above spear and across central field; to upper right, owl standing right on spear. McClean 4841 var. (no owl); see also M+M FPL 269 (October 1966), no. 12 (same dies). VF, darkly toned, traces of deposits under the tone.
