(874.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. AR Stater (22mm, 6.31 g, 1h). Androsthenes and Aristokles, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath; [E]ΠI ANΔPO/ΣΘENOYΣ to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; A-IPΣ/TO-KΛ/HC (sic) above spear and across central field. McClean 4850 var. (different obv. magistrate). VF, attractive cabinet tone.

Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath; [EΠ]I ANΔ[PO]/ΣΘENOYΣ to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩ[N], Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; A-PIΣ/TO/KΛ/HΣ above spear and in inner left field. McClean 4855-60 var. (arrangement of rev. legend). VF, small flan crack at 4 on the obv., small edge chip at 4 on the reverse.

Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; A-PI[Σ]/TO-KΛ/Σ-H above spear and across center field. McClean 4852-4 (same dies). VF, struck with a very worn obverse die.

Even though the obverse die is very worn, it appears that the magistrate’s name on the obverse was erased in the die. Whether the obverse legend was EΠI ANΔPOΣΘENOYΣ or ΠTOΛEMAIOY is unknown.

McClean 4797-8. VF, attractively toned.
