(885.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. AR Stater (22mm, 5.85 g, 12h). Damothoinos and Antigonos, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing laurel wreath / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; ΔAM-OΘOI/NOY above spear with last letters below, [A]NTIΓO[NOΣ] in exergue. Not found in the consulted references. VF, toned, a few minor deposits; very rare.


(885.2) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Fourrée AR Stater (21mm, 5.01 g, 12h). Damothoinos and Antigonos, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing laurel wreath / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; ΔAM-OΘO[I]/NO[Y] above spear with last letters below, ANTIΓ[ONOΣ] in exergue. Prototype not found in the consulted references. Near VF, toned, copper core exposed in several places; very rare.

Struck from the same dies as the previous coin, which proves that official dies were used to strike plated fakes.

(885.3) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. AR Stater (22mm, 6.13 g, 12h). Damotho(i)nos and Philo(xeni)-, magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; [Δ]A-MOΘONOC (sic) above spear, NI in inner right field, Φ-I/Λ-O across central field. This variety not found in the consulted references, but cf. Klose, p. 345, 9th entry for these magistrates. VF, attractively toned and well struck; rare variety.
