(889.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Second half 2nd century BC. AR Drachm (18mm, 4.29 g, 10h). Philo..., magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo right; monogram to left / [Θ]EΣΣA/ΛΩ[N], Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; Φ-I/Λ-O across central field. McClean 4964, pl. 180, 12 var. (monogram). Good Fine, toned, a few surface marks; scarce variety.

Laureate head of Apollo right; monogram to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; M-A across central field. BMC 40, pl. I, 3; SNG Christomanos 453. VF, toned, flan is a little compact; attractive obverse style.

Laureate head of Apollo right; HP monogram to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; Π-I across central field. BMC 39; SNG Ashmolean 3814. VF, toned.

Laureate head of Apollo right; HP monogram to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; HΓ monogram in inner right field. BMC 42; McClean 4468; Dorotheum 244 (24 October 1961), no. 462 (same dies). Near VF, toned; obv. die somewhat worn.

Laureate head of Apollo right; HP monogram to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; HΓ monogram in inner right field. BMC 42; McClean 4968. VF, lightly toned.

On this example, there are traces of the previous magistrate letters Π-I across the central field on the reverse, which must have been erased from the die. The same effect is noted on some hemidrachms from the same issue (see lot 896.1 below).
