Thessalian League. Lot of 10 coins.

Triton XV, Lot: 900. Estimate $200.
Sold for $700. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Lot of 10 coins.

(900.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Late 2nd – mid 1st century BC. Æ Trichalkon (20mm, 4.96 g, 12h). Hippolo(chos), magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo right / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; IΠΠ-OΛO above spear; below shield, owl standing left. Rogers 20a or b corr. (spelling of name). Good Fine, rough pale green patina.

Rogers 20a and 20b are essentially the same as written by the author, as both have the owl listed “below” the shield. It is therefore uncertain which one should have it below, and which should have it to the right of the shield, as on the following coin.

(900.2) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Late 2nd – mid 1st century BC. Æ Trichalkon (21mm, 7.05 g, 12h). Hippolochos, magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo right / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; [IΠ]Π-OΛOXO[Y] above spear; to right of shield, owl standing right. Rogers 20a or b corr. (spelling of name, location of owl). Good Fine, rough dark green patina.

(900.3) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Late 2nd – mid 1st century BC. Æ Trichalkon (20mm, 8.03 g, 12h). Hippolo(chos) and Ari..., magistrates. Laureate head of Apollo right / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; IΠΠ-OΛO above spear, A-P/I across central field. Rogers 21. Near VF, attractive green patina.

(900.4) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Trichalkon (20mm, 8.33 g, 12h). Alexan(dros), magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo right / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; AΛE-ΞANΔ above spear, sling with dart – kestrosphendone(?) in outer right field. Rogers 19 corr. (symbol). Good Fine, stripped brown surfaces, traces of green patina.

Rogers’ identification of the symbol on the reverse as an amphora with grapes is certainly incorrect. It is most likely a sling with dart – kestrosphendone (see Rogers fig. 3 and J. Warren, “Two notes on Thessalian coins,” NC 1961, p. 5-8).

(900.5) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Trichalkon (19mm, 5.98 g, 12h). Kyllos and Petraios, magistrates. Laureate head of Apollo right / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; [KY]Λ-Λ[OY] above spear, ΠETPAIO[Σ] in exergue. Rogers 27 var. (shorter version of name in exergue). Fine, rough green patina, planchet flaw.

This coin is unusual in that the second part of the ethnic is written upward, rather than the canonical downwards.

(900.6) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Trichalkon (20mm, 7.97 g, 12h). Kyllos and Petraios, magistrates. Laureate head of Apollo right / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; KYΛ-ΛOY above spear, ΠETPAI in exergue. Rogers 27. Fine, rough pale green patina.

(900.7) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Trichalkon (19mm, 6.11 g, 12h). Kyllos and Petraios, magistrates. Laureate head of Apollo right / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩM (sic), Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; [K]YΛ-Λ[OY] above spear, ΠETPAI in exergue. Rogers 27 var. (spelling of ethnic). Near VF, attractive pale green patina.

(900.8) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Trichalkon (20mm, 6.79 g, 12h). Isagoras, magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo right / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; [IΣ]A-ΓOPOY above spear, wing downward in outer right field. Rogers 28 var. (spelling of name and symbol). Near VF, slightly rough, dark green patina.

(900.9) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid – late 1st century BC. Æ Trichalkon (19mm, 6.84 g, 12h). Mnesi... and Polyxe..., magistrates. Laureate head of Apollo right / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; MN-HCI above spear, [Π]OΛ[YΞE] in exergue. Not found in the consulted references. Near VF, even green patina; scarce.

Laureate head of Apollo right / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; [Π]VΘΩ-NOΣ above spear, tripod in outer right field. Rogers 29. Near VF, dark green patina.
