Cf. Rogers 40-41 for these magistrates appearing individually on this type with grain ear. Near VF, rough green patina; rare.

This is an unusual coin, that has the initial letters of two magistrates’ names above the spear. Both of these magistrates are known individually for this type with the grain ear symbol. It is uncertain whether both names are intentionally placed here to indicate the coin issue has two magistrates, or whether it is an error on the part of the engraver. As it is unusual to find two names above the spear, rather than one with a second name elsewhere on the die, it is tempting to think this is more likely an error. At the same time, the dies of this small denomination do not allow much room for a second name, such that it may only be possible to place both on the die if they are located above the spear.
