THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. temp. Augustus. 27 BC–AD 14. Æ Trihemiassarion (21mm, 8.48 g, 7h). In the name of Tiberus, as Caesar, circa AD 4-14. Megalokles, strategos. TIBEPIΣ ΣEBAΣTHΩ, bare head right / ΘEΣΣAΛ-Ω MEΓAΛO and monogram, laureate head of Apollo right. Burrer Em. 2, Series 3, 108 corr. (A23/R87; monogram incorrectly drawn, Apollo wears laurel wreath, not band); RPC 1429 (same rev. die as illustration); see also Nomos 4, 1399 (same dies). Near VF, red and brown patina, lightly smoothed; rare.
The resolution of the monogram at the end of the reverse legend is debatable. RPC prefers that it is the remainder of Megalokles’ name, while ASW (in Nomos’ BCD Thessaly sale) suggests it may be the name of the magistrate Arist..., who appears on other series in this emission.
