(921.1) THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Tiberius. AD 14-37. Æ Diassarion (21mm, 8.76 g, 1h). Lykoutos, strategos. [ΣEB]AΣTHΩN ΘEΣΣAΛ[ΩN], laureate head right / [ΣTPATHΓOY] ΛYKOYTOY, Athena Itonia standing left, holding in her right hand Nike--who stands left, presenting wreath, and resting her left hand on shield set on ground to right; monogram in lower left field. Burrer Em. 1, Series 3, 31 corr. (A14/R20; no spear on rev.); RPC Supp. S-1431A. Good Fine, green patina, a few cleaning marks; rare.

Burrer notes that the Athena Itonia’s spear is supposed to be on the reverse, but it is not present on this reverse die, R20 (see also Burrer pl. 6, R20).

ΣEBAΣTHΩN ΘEΣΣAΛΩN, laureate head right / ΣTPATHΓO-Y ΛY-KOYTOY, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; monogram in right field. Burrer Em. 1, Series 4, 36.1 (A16/R25 – this coin, illustrated on pl. 6); RPC 1432 (same dies as illustration). Near VF, dark green patina, minor roughness; extremely rare.

[Θ]EΣΣAΛΩN, helmeted head of Athena right / ΛYKOYTOY, Athena Itonia standing left, holding in her right hand Nike--who stands left, presenting wreath, and resting her left hand on shield set on ground to right; spear to right, monogram in lower left field.
