THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. temp. Nero. AD 54-68. Æ Tetrassarion (30mm, 20.25 g, 12h). Laouchos, strategos. EIPHNH ΣEBAΣTH ΘEΣΣAΛΩN, draped bust of Eirene Sebaste right, wearing wreath of grain ears and olive branch; all within laurel wreath / [Λ]AOVXOV ΣTPA[THΓOV], horse standing right, its reins held in right hand of Thessalia, standing facing, holding grain ear and poppy in left hand. Burrer Em. 2 (of Nero), Series 2, Grp. 2, 63.1 corr. (A22/R41 – this coin, illustrated on pl. 12; end of rev. legend not on second line); RPC 1447. Good Fine, green patina, a few minor obverse pits; extremely rare.
This is the other obverse die of this type, equally rare and coveted, also for its different reverse scene. Although this coin was one of the first Thessalian Provincials this writer acquired, he has never seen another one even half as nice since he bought this one in the 70’s.
