(985.1) THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Maximinus I. AD 235-238. Æ Tetrassarion (27mm, 12.23 g, 6h). ΓIOV OV • MAΞIMINOC, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / KOINON ΘЄCCAΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; star in upper left field (barely visible). Burrer, MA-G –; Rogers 118. Good Fine, green patina.


(985.2) THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Maximinus I. AD 235-238. Æ Triassarion (24mm, 8.18 g, 7h). ΓAIOV OVH MAΞIMЄINOC, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / KOINO-N ΘЄCC/AΛΩN, Nike, holding wreath in extended right hand, reins in left hand, driving triga galloping right; Γ (mark of value) below horses (barely visible). Burrer, MA-G 43 var. (distribution of rev. legend); Rogers 119 var. (obv. legend, and same). Good Fine, green patina, thinning at the highest points on the reverse.


(985.3) THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Maximinus I. AD 235-238. Æ Tetrassarion (27mm, 15.16 g, 7h). ΓAIOV OVH MAΞIMЄIN[OC], laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / KOINON ΘЄ-CC-AΛΩN, warrior advancing right, holding spear in his right hand, shield on left arm. Burrer, MA-G 44; Rogers –. Good Fine, rough brown surfaces and an edge metal fault at 7 o’clock on the reverse; very rare and quite interesting.

The “warrior” here looks more like “Athena in the posture of a warrior”; the engraver must have confused the two images and produced this amusing hybrid.
