CYCLADES, Thera(?) Circa 600-550 BC. AR Stater (13.93 gm). Four dolphins, alternating left and right / Incuse punch. Traité -; Boutin, "Essai de Classement de monnaies archaïques de la mer Egée au type des deux dauphins,"
Numismatics - Witness to History, -; Rosen -; SNG Copenhagen -. Toned, good VF, surfaces evenly porous. Apparently an unpublished type with four dolphins. Unique? ($2000)
Attribution to Thera is only conjectural, based on the dolphin motif on the obverse. Stylistically the coin is not at all similar to the other issues attributed to Thera (see the next lot). Other possiblities, at least in this catalouers opinion, could be Caria (the punch is similar to those found on coins of Kaunos) or perhaps Lycia. Nothing is know about the find spot of this coin. Any suggestions?
