JUDAEA. Bar Kochba Revolt. Undated Year 1-2 (132-134 AD). AR Zuz (Denarius) (3.31 gm). "Shim" in wreath / "Eleazer the Priest", jug with lulav. Mildenberg 8 (O4/R6); Hendin 685; Meshorer 234a. Toned, good VF, choice flan, overstruck on an Arabian drachm of Trajan. Rare hybrid variety. ($4000)
The name of Eleazer appears on the coins of the first year of the Bar Kochba revolt, but disappears after a brief appearance with Shimon on these hybrid coins. Although the two leaders apparently joined together to spark the revolt, Eleazer seems to have faded in importance as the war progressed and primacy passed to the leader of the army, Shimon.
