Fine Style Phocaea Medallion

IONIA, Phocaea. Faustina Junior. Augusta, AD 147-175. Æ Medallion (36mm, 30.02 g, 12h). Attalos, magistrate. ΦAVCTINA CEBACTH, draped bust left / ATTAΛOC ΦΩKAIEVCIN ANEΘHKE, Faustina standing facing, head turned right, holding child, other children standing at feet. BMC -; SNG Copenhagen -; SNG von Aulock -; SNG Munich -; RPC Online -; Mionnet VI, 1341 (valued at 150 fr. in 1833). Near VF, dark brown patina. Remnants of solder, or more likely, silvering on reverse. Extremely rare and of fine style.


A highly interesting medallion, from the same series as RPC temp. no. 3310 (see link below). The reverse legend records that Attalos issued the medallions at his own expense.
