BAKTRIA, Indo-Greek Kings. Lysias. Circa 120-110 BC. AR Drachm (2.36 gm). Helmeted and diademed heroic bust left, holding spear, wearing elephant's scalp with tusks on near shoulder / Nude Herakles standing facing, crowning himself, holding club, lion's skin and palm; monograms to left and right. Bopearachchi Série 5B; SNG ANS 1035; MIG 265a. Good VF, good metal. Very rare. ($400)
Bopearachchi records only three published examples of this bust type, with three more in unpublished collections. Lysias is wearing an elephant's scalp with tusks on his shoulder instead of the aegis. He also introduced a new attribute to Herakles - the palm branch. This is the second example ever offered by CNG- the first realized $750 as an uncleaned specimen (Classical Numismatic Group Auction 54, lot 1009).
