BAKTRIA, Indo-Scythian Kings. Maues. Circa 85-80 BC. Æ 28mm (9.56 gm). Elephant's head right, wearing bell around neck; all within beed and reel border / Caduceus; monogram to left. Senior 5.1; Alram 961; AIC 231; MIG 707. VF, dark green patina, light cleaning marks and smoothing. ($150) This type is rather atavistic, hailing back to the century-previous type of Demetrios I, the Graeco-Baktrian king of circa 200 BC. The rehashing of a former type probably speaks to a feeling of historical continuity, rather than merely being a continuation or imitation of a popular regional type.
