LUCANIA, Sybaris. Circa 453-448 BC. AR Triobol (10mm, 1.18 g, 11h). Poseidon advancing right, wielding trident / Bird standing right within circular incuse. Kraay, Coinage pl. IV, 9; SNG ANS 860; HN Italy 1744. Near VF, porous with some rough deposits. Rare.

From the Collection of Dick Schultz.

This coin is from the third foundation of Sybaris. The citizens of Laos played a role in this foundation, and Kraay believed the bird on the reverse was intended to be a λαιοξ, a type of thrush, which served as a pun on the name of the city Laos.
