276, Lot: 43. Estimate $75.
Sold for $50. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THRACE, Abdera. Circa 395-360 BC. Æ (10mm, 1.21 g, 11h). Griffin springing right / E[ΠΙ..]ΔΩPO, head of Hermes left wearing petasos; caduceus before. C-N 22 (same dies); SNG Copenhagen -. VF, dark green patina.

The specimen recorded by Chryssanthaki-Nagel did not have a legible reverse and she speculated that it was an issue of the magistrate Erophanes. The quality of the plates in C-N are marginal at best, but this appears to be the same dies as the coin she illustrates, but it is clearly not Erophanes with this ending of the magistrate’s name. Perhaps this is an issue of the magistrate Pythodoros?
