SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 17.43 g 11), circa 415-405. Charioteer, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in both, driving galloping chariot to left; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver; in exergue, grain ear (
here off the flan).
Rev. [ΣΥΡΑ]ΚΟΣΙΟΝ Head of Kore to right, wearing ampyx and sphendone ornamented with stars, double curved earring and necklace; around her head, four dolphins. BMC 221, BMFA 414 = Warren 382, Gulbenkian 285, Rizzo pl. XLVII, 10 = Brussels Du Chastel 113, and Tudeer 63 (V22/R41) (
all same dies). Very rare. Remarkably fresh and crisp with a beautiful portrait of Kore. Struck on a short flan and with traces of overstriking,
otherwise, extremely fine.
