SICILY, Unlocated Punic mints. Circa 320/315-305/300. Tetradrachm (Silver, 16.12 g 1). Head of Persephone to left, wearing wreath of wheat leaves, triple pendant earring and pearl necklace; below her chin, scallop shell; around her head, four dolphins: one, before her nose, swimming downwards to right, the others swimming to left.
Rev. ‘MMHNT Horse’s head to left; behind, date palm. Jenkins 161 (O49/R145). A lovely example, beautifully toned and most attractive. Extremely fine.
From a European collection, acquired in the 1980s.
This is a particularly fine example, especially thanks to the old collection patina it bears. It is also notable for its light weight: it must have escaped the mint solely because the overseer was not alert the day it was made!
