ARKADIA, Heraia. Circa 350 BC. Obol (Silver, 0.85 g 2). Head of Artemis to left, her hair tied in a knot at the top of her head, wearing a pendant earring, and with her quiver at her shoulder.
Rev. H with straight sides over bow to right. BCD Peloponnesos 1366 = Pozzi (Boutin) 4329 (
this coin). Traité III, 1014, pl. CCXXVIII, 15 (
same dies). Extremely rare and of beautiful style. Good very fine.
From the collections of BCD, LHS 96, 8 May 2006, 1366 and S. Pozzi, Naville I, 4 April 1921, 1941.
This head of Artemis is a gem; she is portrayed as a kind and approachable goddess and is quite different from the coldly awesome figure who appears on the contemporary staters of nearby Stymphalos (as BCD 1700, 1704 and 1705).
