ISLANDS off CARIA, Rhodos. Rhodes. Circa 404-385 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 15.50 g 12). Head of Helios facing, turned slight to the right.
Rev. ΡΟΔΙΟΝ Rose with bud to right; on left, grain ear over Ζ. Ashton 32. Bérend 56. Hecatomnus 62 (A41/P51). Extremely rare. A remarkably fine example, toned, beautifully struck and of fine style. A few very minor marks,
otherwise, extremely fine.
Ex Triton XIII, 5 January 2010, 209 .
This head of Helios is filled with emotion: his eyes radiate understanding, rather than the anger or sadness they appear to have on other dies. The quality of this piece is outstanding - the dies show no sign of wear; and the mint workers used them to produce a coin that is very strongly struck, in high relief and well-centered.
