C. Clodius C.f. Vestalis. 41 BC. Aureus (Gold, 8.11 g 11), Rome. C.CLODIVS C.F. Head of Flora to right, wearing wreath of flowers and pendant earring; behind, flower.
Rev. VESTALIS Draped figure of a Vestal seated on stool to left, holding culullus in her right hand. Babelon (Claudia) 12. Bahrfeldt 73. Calicó 10. Crawford 512/1. CRI 316. Sydenham 1134. Very rare. A particularly attractive example, very well preserved. Two very minor bumps on the obverse,
otherwise, extremely fine.
Ex Numsmatica Ars Classica 33, 6 April 2006, 385.
The figure on the reverse of this aureus has been identified as the Vestal Claudia, a daughter of Ap. Claudius Pulcher, consul in 143 (it is probable that the branch of the Claudii who had the cognomen Vestalis took that from her).
