PISIDIA, Etenna. Julia Paula. Augusta, AD 219-220. Æ (23mm, 7.75 g, 6h). IOYΛ KOP ΠAVΛA CЄB, draped bust right, wearing stephane / ЄTЄN-N-ЄΩN, Tyche standing left, holding rudder and cornucopia. Unpublished in the standard references. Near VF, dark green patina.
Von Aulock’s catalogue of Etenna (in Münzen und Städt Pisidens) records only two types for Julia Paula from Etenna, each of which he knew from only a single specimen. These are the recurring (yet frustratingly enigmatic) types of “female being attacked by serpent as while running past a young male accompanied by dog” for the larger denomation and “two nude males running in opposite directions” for the smaller. The current specimen belongs to the latter denomination.
