Claudius. AD 41-54. AR Denarius (18mm, 2.77 g, 2h). Contemporary imitation of a Rome mint issue of AD 41-42. Laureate head right / Constantia seated left on curule chair. Cf. RIC I 14; cf. RSC 6. Fine, lightly toned, deep scratches in fields.
An unusual denarius of light weight. The notion that the coin is a fourrée, of which examples imitating Claudius are frequently encountered, is complicated by the ribbed edge, which gives the appearance of it being overstruck on a Republican serrate.
