Sold for $525. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Quietus. Usurper, AD 260-261. Antoninianus (22mm, 3.92 g, 12h). Samosata mint. 2nd emission. Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Mars advancing right, holding spear and shield; star to right. RIC V 7 corr. (star not described); MIR 44, 1737n; RSC 9 corr. (same). Good VF, details strengthened. Extremely rare - the first offered by CNG. None listed on CoinArchives.com.

The authors of RIC were unable to confirm the existence of this type for Quietus, but suspected it as probable since Cohen (following Mionnet) included it in his corpus and since the type is known for Macrianus. The appearance of one in MIR confirmed the type’s existence. The present specimen is possibly the second known example.
