CARUS. 282-283 AD. Antoninianus (4.74 gm). Antioch mint. Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right / VIRTVS AVGGG, Carus standing right, receiving Victory from Jupiter, standing left; */B/XXI. RIC V pt. 2, 125. Near EF, nicely centered, reverse lightly double struck. ($150)
From the Jürgen K. Schmidt Collection.
The terminal AVGGG of the reverse legend indicates that this coin was struck near the end of Carus' reign. While on campaign against Persia, the emperor had wisely (but not fortuitously, as subsequent events would prove) proclaimed his sons Numerian and Carinus as Augusti.
