On October 4th, 1598 Spanish forces under the command of admiral Francesco de Mendoza besieged Wirich VI, count of Daun-Falkenstein, in Broich Castle. Wirich pleaded neutrality and attempted to negotiate peace, the Spanish refused to lift siege. Although promised safe passage beyond the gates, the Spanish soldiers fell on the refugees, massacring over two-hundred. Wirich himself was captured and killed under a similar ploy a few days later.
