New Kingdom. 1550-1075 BC. Steatite amulet in the shape of a frog (15x9mm). Back in the form of a seated frog, base engraved with signs for “Son of Amun”. Intact, pierced for mounting. Rare.
From the Dr. John N. Winnie Collection, purchased from Ancient World Arts on 3/20/99.
The frog was associated with rebirth and regeneration and was particularly linked to the frog-headed goddess of childbirth Hekat. This frog amulet was probably intended to protect a woman during pregnancy and childbirth.
