New Kingdom. 1550-1075 BC. Steatite amulet in the shape of a recumbent hippopotamus (17x13mm). Back in the form of a recumbent hippopotamus, its head turned toward the side, with ridges on stomach probably indicating it is a nursing female, base engraved with sun disk and vulture. Cf. NFA 239; Matouk II, 684ff. Intact, once glazed, pierced for mounting. Very rare.
From the Dr. John N. Winnie Collection, purchased in London on 2/16/92.
